Cafe Au Lait is credited with sparking the recent “dallia adiction” explosion in popularity among gardeners, florists, and brides.
Key characteristics:
• Form: Informal decorative (ID) – fully double with broad, slightly twisted or ruffled petals that give a lush, plush appearance. *m
• Bloom size: Dinnerplate (8–10 inches, sometimes larger in ideal conditions).
• Color: Highly variable and weather-dependent – creamy ivory base blending with soft peach, blush pink, apricot, rose, or mocha tones; often darker in the center fading to paler edges, evoking coffee with milk (hence the name). *I grow the creamy light color variety).
• Plant height: 3–5 feet.
• Growth habits: Vigorous and productive once established, with strong stems excellent for cutting (long vase life); good tuber producer. Blooms from mid-summer to frost, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil; benefits from pinching, staking, and deadheading.
• Best uses: Ultimate wedding and bouquet favorite for its romantic, ethereal look; stunning in arrangements with pastels or as a standalone statement. Pairs beautifully with deeper tones for contrast.
Hybridized around 1967 (introduced circa 1968), exact originator details are not widely documented in public records, though it’s considered a vintage cultivar that gained massive fame in the 2010s through social media and floral designers
